The Million Dollar Highway is the part of Colorado State Highway 550 in Western Colorado that runs from Ouray to Durango. This narrow highway winds through the Rocky Mountains and features many spectacular views of mountains and small mining towns. The missus and I drove through in September 2014. We got lucky – the aspens were in full color and a snowstorm had just blown through, leaving a dusting of snow on the mountains. The result made for an incredible drive. Unfortunately, we needed to get to Durango in a hurry so we couldn’t stay as long was we would have liked to take in the scenery. Here is one example:
This is definitely a must return place. We would have loved to poke around Ouray and the other little towns, but time wasn’t a luxury.
